Validation, Verification and audits for CDM

CDM audits

Validation is an assessment of the project design document of a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project before it becomes operative. It shall ensure that the project fulfils the CDM requirements and fit to generate tradable CER’s. As DOE we then apply to have the project registered with the UNFCCC or the other voluntary carbon entities.

After successful completion of the validation audit the project is submitted to CDM secretariat requesting for registration of the project as a CDM Project with UNFCCC.Verification and certification takes place after a CDM or voluntary project is implemented. Verification is a periodic review to determine actual emission reductions generated in addition to verifying continued compliance with the criteria defined under the CDM rules and EB guidelines.

Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) allows emission reduction projects in developing countries to earn certified emission reduction (CER’s), each equivalent to one tonne of CO2. These CER’s can be sold, traded and used by industrialized countries to meet part of their emission reduction targets. There are many entities and institutions who buy CER’s for promoting sustainable development and mitigation of climate change. CDM is the main source of income for UNFCCC Adaptation Fund.
